About

I went to Japan to see what it was like.

I liked enough of what I saw to live there for the past 5 years.

I would say that I am involved in more “incidents”/ have a lot more accidents here than I did when I lived in the U.S., but healthcare here is a lot cheaper.

Now I live in the mountains by Nagano city.  I paint outside whenever weather/ circumstances permit.   I spend a lot of time looking for places with a certain ‘energy’ to them, and when I find those places/ those things, I go back.

I`m not so much concerned with how much a picture looks like what it depicts, but I want for my pictures to feel the way that I feel when I`m there.

Something is lurking deep in the scenery.

Things are not things, so much as they are expressions of energy.
Trees, for instance, are not merely “trees”, but a growing, breathing, reaching presence.
It is easy to forget, so I make “reminders”.

  4. Hello Ryan
Really laughed reading your most recent blog – great stories, expertley told. V. impressed with the artwork you uploaded. Still get pleasure from the painting you did for us of St. Austell Bay. Would love to make it to your wedding but teaching commitments mean I am unable to make it. Planning to visit Japan in 2010 will keep you posted. Can you send your postal address to my email please?
